Area Converter

Convert square meters, square feet, acres, hectares and more.

The Area Converter handles the units used for land, floors and surfaces: square meters, square feet and square yards for real estate; acres, hectares and square miles for land; square centimeters, inches and kilometers for anything from tiles to countries.

Real estate is where the confusion bites hardest: an 85 m² apartment is about 915 ft², and a 0.25-acre lot is roughly 0.101 hectares. Listing a property in the wrong system changes its size by a factor of 10.76 (the m²-to-ft² ratio), so an exact converter matters whenever you compare listings across countries or check an agent's numbers.

All conversions derive from exact definitions (1 m = 3.28084 ft, so 1 m² = 10.7639 ft²) and run locally in your browser. One hectare is 10,000 m² — about 2.471 acres.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert square meters to square feet?

Multiply by 10.7639: 85 m² × 10.7639 = 914.9 ft². Because the conversion is squared, the m²↔ft² factor (10.76) differs from the linear one (3.28) — a common source of errors the converter eliminates.

What is the difference between an acre and a hectare?

A hectare is 10,000 m² (100 m × 100 m) and is the standard metric unit for land; an acre is 43,560 ft² (about 4,047 m²). One hectare equals about 2.471 acres. Farmers in the US think in acres; most other countries use hectares.

Why does 1 m² not convert to 3.28 ft²?

Because area scales by the square of the linear ratio: 1 m² = (3.28084 ft)² ≈ 10.76 ft². Always square the length conversion when working with areas — or simply let this tool do it.
