Morse Code Translator
Convert text to Morse code and back — letters by space, words by slash.
The Morse Code Translator converts between plain text and Morse code in both directions. Encode messages into dots and dashes, or paste Morse — letters separated by single spaces, words by / — and decode it back to text.
Morse code, invented for the telegraph in the 1830s, is still the best-known binary code on Earth: SOS (... --- ...) is recognized worldwide, and ham radio operators, pilots and hobbyists use it daily. This translator handles the full ITU alphabet including digits and common punctuation.
The standard encoding keeps letters readable (each separated by one space) and words distinct (separated by /), which is the convention most decoders and radio references expect. Everything runs locally in your browser.
Morse output
.... . .-.. .-.. --- / .-- --- .-. .-.. -..
Standard ITU Morse: letters separated by single spaces, words by / . Characters without a Morse form are skipped in encoding.
How to use the Morse Code Translator
- Choose Text → Morse or Morse → Text.
- Type your input — words separated by spaces when encoding; letters by spaces and words by / when decoding.
- Read the converted result.
- Copy it, or tap 'Load example' to try SOS.
- Decode anything you receive the same way.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Morse code for SOS?
SOS is ... --- ... (three dots, three dashes, three dots) sent as one continuous signal with no letter gaps — chosen because it is simple and unmistakable, not as an abbreviation.
How do I separate letters and words in Morse?
By timing: one space between letters, three between words (in written form, a / between words is the common convention this tool uses). Speed in radio Morse is measured in words per minute.
Is Morse code still used?
Yes — in amateur radio (where it retains enthusiasts and emergency nets), as a learning tool, and in assistive communication. Its simplicity means it works with light, sound or any binary channel.
