Data Storage Converter
Convert bytes, KB/MB/GB/TB and KiB/MiB/GiB — decimal vs binary made clear.
The Data Storage Converter moves between every unit of digital storage: bits and bytes, kilobytes through petabytes (decimal, base 10), and the binary KiB/MiB/GiB/TiB units (base 2) that operating systems actually use. It also makes the classic 1000-vs-1024 confusion visible in one glance.
Hard drive and SSD manufacturers quote decimal units — a '1 TB' drive holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes — while Windows and macOS report capacities in binary-based units, showing it as roughly 931 GiB (or '931 GB' in Windows' labeling). That 9% discrepancy between the box and the operating system confuses almost everyone at least once. This converter shows both systems side by side: 1 TB = 0.9095 TiB, and 1 GiB = 1.0737 GB.
Every unit is defined exactly in bytes, conversions happen locally in your browser, and the labels make it obvious whether you are looking at decimal or binary units.

1 MB = 0.001 GB
1 MB = 0.001 GB
1 GB = 1,000 MB
How to use the Data Storage Converter
- Type the amount of data.
- Choose the from-unit — KB/MB/GB are decimal (1000×); KiB/MiB/GiB are binary (1024×).
- Choose the to-unit.
- Read the converted value and the exact rate.
- Check both systems to understand why a 1 TB drive shows ~931 GB on your computer.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my 1 TB hard drive only show 931 GB?
Manufacturers measure in decimal: 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Operating systems report in binary units of 1,024: 1 TiB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes. Dividing 1 TB by 1 TiB gives 0.9095 TiB, which Windows labels '931 GB' — nothing is missing, the units simply differ.
What is the difference between KB and KiB?
KB (kilobyte) is 1,000 bytes in the decimal system used by drive makers and telecoms. KiB (kibibyte) is 1,024 bytes in the binary system used by RAM and operating systems. The gap compounds at each scale: 1 GB = 0.9313 GiB, 1 TB = 0.9095 TiB.
How many MB are in a GB?
1,000 in decimal (the drive/spec number: 1 GB = 1,000 MB), or 1,024 MiB in one GiB if you are counting binary. This converter shows both answers so you can use whichever matches your context.
