Tip & Bill Split Calculator

Split restaurant bills with tax and tip — evenly, or fairly by what each person ordered.

The Tip & Bill Split Calculator handles the full end-of-meal math: enter the bill subtotal, your local sales tax rate and the tip percentage, then split the total evenly between the table — or fairly, by entering what each person actually ordered so tax and tip follow their share.

Two split modes cover real dinners. 'Split evenly' divides everything equally — right for shared plates and group meals. 'Split by what each person ordered' scales each person's tax and tip with their own subtotal, so the person who ordered the steak and wine contributes proportionally more of the tax and tip than the person who had the salad.

The breakdown shows the tax, the tip and the true total — and the tip is calculated on the pre-tax amount by default, with an option to include tax, matching how most people tip. Everything runs locally in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the basic Tip Calculator?

The basic tool answers 'tip % and split evenly' instantly. This calculator adds the full picture: sales tax, tax-inclusive tipping, even vs. by-order splitting, and a line-item table — for dinners where fairness needs the extra detail.

Should the tip be calculated before or after tax?

Common practice in the US is to tip on the pre-tax amount — tipping 18% of the taxed total quietly overpays. The calculator uses pre-tax by default and lets you switch if your group prefers including tax.

How does the by-order mode divide tax and tip?

Each person's share of the subtotal determines their share of the table's total tax and tip: order 30% of the bill, pay 30% of the tax and tip. The per-person lines show exactly what each owes.
