Grade Calculator

Weighted average of your scores with letter grade — or what you need on the final to hit a target.

The Grade Calculator solves the two questions students actually ask. First: 'what is my overall grade?' — enter each assignment's score and how much it counts toward the final grade, and the tool returns your weighted average with a US letter grade and approximate GPA. Second: 'what do I need on the final to get an A?' — enter your current grade, the final's weight and your target, and it computes the exact score required.

Weighted grading trips up everyone, because an exam worth 50% moves your average twice as much as a quiz worth 10%. This tool keeps the weighting honest by asking for each item's weight explicitly, and shows both the weighted and unweighted averages so you can see the effect. Rows are fully editable — add, remove, rename and tweak until the numbers reflect your real syllabus.

The letter scale shown (A ≥ 90, B ≥ 80, C ≥ 70, D ≥ 60 with +/− bands) is the common US 10-point scale; if your school uses a different cut-off, the percentages are still what matter. Everything computes locally in your browser.

How to use the Grade Calculator

  1. Choose 'My overall grade' and enter each assignment's name, score (as a percentage) and weight (as a percentage of the final grade).
  2. Add or remove rows to match your syllabus, and tick weights that should sum to 100%.
  3. Read your weighted average, letter grade and GPA.
  4. Switch to 'What I need on the final' and enter your current grade, the final's weight and your target grade.
  5. The tool tells you the minimum score needed — or celebrates if you have already secured the grade.

Frequently asked questions

How is a weighted grade calculated?

Multiply each score by its weight, add the products, and divide by the total weight: (85 × 25 + 90 × 25 + 88 × 50) ÷ 100 = 87.75. If your weights do not sum to 100, the tool still normalizes correctly by dividing by the total entered.

What score do I need on my final exam?

Use the second mode: required = (target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. For a 90 target with an 85 current and a 20%-weight final: (90 − 85 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = 110% — impossible, which tells you the target is out of reach unless extra credit is on the table.

What letter grade system does this use?

A common US scale: A+ ≥ 97, A ≥ 93, A− ≥ 90, B+ ≥ 87 … down through F below 60, with an approximate 4.0 GPA mapping. Many schools use slightly different cut-offs, so treat the letter as indicative and rely on the percentages.

Does it calculate GPA across multiple classes?

Not directly — GPA averages letter grades across classes with credit hours. Use this tool per class to find each grade, then combine using your school's credit-hour formula.
